Horse Whipped

They set out at first light, horses saddled and gear packed light — pup tent, tools, food, and canteens. Joe checked the leather straps on his saddle, the sun catching in his dark hair, while Gene swung up easily onto his horse, tall and broad against the morning sky.

“This is the longest rotation,” Joe muttered, tightening a strap. “Three, four days if the fences are bad.”

“Good thing we don’t mind hard work,” Gene shot back, flashing a grin. What he didn’t mention was the riding crop tucked discreetly into his gear, waiting for the right moment.

The first day was mercilessly hot. By noon their shirts were tied around their saddles, and both of them rode bare-chested, skin shining with sweat. The fences in the first stretch held fine, but a mile out they had to tighten a post and chase two calves back through a loose rail. Gene laughed when Joe jogged after them, his boots kicking dust.

“You look good running, you know that?” Gene teased, wiping sweat from his brow.

Joe smirked. “You’d better appreciate it, because you’re next if the herd bolts.”

By late afternoon the heat drove them down to Red Creek. They stripped boots, jeans, everything, and plunged into the cool water, splashing each other like boys. Gene caught Joe by the waist and hauled him under, only for Joe to surface sputtering and drag Gene down in return. Breathless laughter gave way to quiet when Joe slid closer, their chests slick against each other in the current. Gene bent, kissed him once, slow and tasting of sun and water. They left it at that, climbing back onto the bank to dry off in the heat of the afternoon sun.

That night they didn’t bother with the tent. They spread their blankets in the grass and lay under the stars. Joe curled against Gene’s shoulder, listening to the low chorus of frogs and the rustle of leaves. Out here, away from the bunkhouse and the rest of the crew, it felt like the world belonged only to them. Gene stayed awake longer, staring at the stars and at Joe’s profile softened by sleep, a smile tugging at his lips.

The second day brought real work. A tree had fallen across a section of fence. They rode to the nearest supply shed, fetched an axe and posts, and set to work. It was grueling: chopping limbs, sawing, hauling splintered wood away. Their arms burned, shirts discarded, muscles taut with strain. Sweat stung their eyes and rolled down their spines, soaking their jeans. Joe paused once, watching Gene’s body flex as he swung the axe, and swallowed hard at the sight.

By the time the fence stood repaired, both men were filthy and aching. They staggered back to the creek, waded in, and floated side by side, cooling the heat of the day.

That night, Gene built a small fire by their camp. He’d been waiting for the right moment, and now it came. From his saddlebag he drew out the riding crop. Joe raised an eyebrow.

“You planning on taming your horse, or me?”

Gene twirled it in his hand, lips quirking. “Thought maybe both. What do you say? Want to try?”

Joe’s eyes narrowed, but there was a glint there too. “Only if you kiss it and make it better.”

Gene’s grin spread. “Deal.”

Joe stood, turned, and bent forward over the log they’d been using as a seat. His jeans slid down, baring the smooth curve of his ass in the firelight. Gene stepped behind him, heart thundering as he drew the crop back. The first strike landed with a sharp snap. Joe hissed, muscles tensing.

“You alright?” Gene asked softly.

Joe’s voice was rough. “Better kiss it like you promised.”

Gene knelt, kissed the reddening skin, slow and tender, before standing again. He struck a second time, harder. Joe groaned this time, a sound that went straight through Gene. The third and fourth followed, each answered by Joe’s shuddering breath and Gene’s soothing mouth against the sting.

By the time Gene dropped the crop aside, both of them were shaking. He pressed kisses up Joe’s back, bit lightly at his shoulder, then pulled him around and kissed him deep, tongues tangling, firelight flickering between them.

They tumbled to the blankets, laughter giving way to moans. Joe’s hands roamed Gene’s sweat-damp back; Gene’s mouth traced every line of Joe’s chest. When Gene entered him, it was rough and hungry, Joe gasping at the fullness, clutching at him with nails and thighs. Each thrust drove them closer until Gene groaned his release and Joe spilled hot between them, both collapsing in a sweaty heap on the blankets.

The night air cooled their skin, but neither moved. Gene brushed hair from Joe’s damp forehead and kissed him slow, the fire crackling low beside them.

In the morning, Joe winced as he pulled his jeans back on, rubbing at the faint marks. “You don’t know your own strength,” he teased.

Gene smirked. “Didn’t hear you complaining last night. Just moaning.”

“Shut up,” Joe muttered, but he was grinning.

They ate a quick breakfast, packed their gear, and rode on. The next days blurred into work: more fences checked, cattle herded back through gaps, sweat and dirt and sunburns. But each night they found the creek, plunging naked into the water, drying side by side on the bank. Sometimes they pitched the tent; sometimes they lay under the stars, naked skin touching, bug spray thick on their arms and necks.

On their last night, Joe lay back on his blanket, gazing at the sky. “So,” he said lazily, “was it the horse that got whipped this trip, or the rider?”

Gene rolled toward him, kissed him slow, their mouths tasting of salt and fire. “Doesn’t matter,” he murmured. “Either way, I’ll always take care of you.”

Joe sighed, content, and let himself be pulled close. The creek murmured nearby, the stars burned overhead, and Gene’s arms wrapped tight around him. Work, play, pain, pleasure — all of it twined together out here, proof that love could live in sweat and laughter as much as in whispers.
